With a name like Jesus Christ Supercar, subtlety was never going to be the move. And on their latest single, “FRENCH GIRLS” the band fully commits to the bit; loud, lusty, and laced with just the right amount of heartbreak.
The second single from their upcoming EP RELIABLE BRAKE SERVICE, “FRENCH GIRLS” is a bratty, blistering slice of powerpop perfection, produced by Mobley (Last Gang Records). Clocking in with punky guitars and a hook that feels genetically engineered to live rent-free in your head, the track doesn’t ask for your attention; it hijacks it.
There’s a playful desperation coursing through the track: a breathless chase after someone far cooler, far more aloof, and, of course, definitively French. Tossing in a few textbook-level Gallic phrases (“Comment tu t’appelles?” hits differently when shouted into a distortion pedal), the band turns cliché into catharsis’ a winking nod to every fumbling crush and unattainable muse.
“FRENCH GIRLS” thrives in its contradictions: slick but scrappy, ironic but sincere, emotionally raw but tongue firmly in cheek. It’s Teenage Fanclub if they grew up watching Amélie on acid, or Weezer in their Pinkerton-core daydreams with a foreign language tape playing in the background.
