Hushtones return with jangly new single “Stupid Things” ahead of sophomore album Wildflowers in the Mystery

Liverpool indie-pop five-piece Hushtones have shared their new single “Stupid Things”, the first taste of forthcoming album Wildflowers in the Mystery, set for release on 19th September.

The track bursts with the band’s signature dual vocals and sharp melodic instincts, pairing jangly guitar lines with synth-tinged pop hooks. Lyrically, “Stupid Things” explores frustration with the clutter of daily life and a yearning to escape into something simpler. Vocalist Martha explains:

This is a theme that underpins a lot of the music we write and this song is the deep dive into it. ‘Stupid things’ are all of the unnecessary possessions we have that clutter our daily lives.

Hushtones – Martha, Mick, Caitlin, Abe, and Joe – emerged from Liverpool’s grassroots scene, swapping ideas at pub jams and open mic nights before honing their dynamic, harmony-driven sound. Since their 2021 debut Greetings From The Other Side, the band have won fans at BBC 6 Music, Radio X, and BBC Radio 1, while Clash Magazine described them as delivering “a joyous jaunt through indie pop tropes, delivered with panache and a huge degree of character.”

Their forthcoming second record takes its name from two places of inspiration: the “fire poppy” (Papaver californicum), a flower that blooms in California after wildfires, and “The Mystery”, a much-loved Liverpool park close to where the band once lived. “It’s something beautiful that comes from something disastrous; like a phoenix rising from the ashes,” they say. The album charts personal upheaval, transformation, and the messy exhilaration of change, a fitting evolution for a band steadily carving their place in the UK indie landscape.
